Few productions in modern theatre have captured the world’s imagination quite like Hamilton. The story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton — an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man and helped shape the foundations of the United States — has become a global cultural phenomenon.
With its groundbreaking score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and classic Broadway, Hamilton tells the story of America then, through the voices of America now.
Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, directed by Thomas Kail, choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, and with musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography of Alexander Hamilton.
Since its Broadway premiere, the production has earned extraordinary acclaim:
• 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical
• 7 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical
• The 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
• The Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album
Today, Hamilton continues to play to packed houses at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London, and captivates audiences worldwide.
DSI London’s Role: Costuming the Revolution
At DSI London, we are immensely proud to play a role in the ongoing legacy of this extraordinary production. Behind the scenes, our South London studio has contributed to the costuming of both the West End cast and the UK & international tour casts, ensuring that the garments worn on stage embody both historical authenticity and performance practicality.
Our work includes:
• Ensemble waistcoats and breeches — tailored with precision to meet the demands of dynamic choreography.
• Period dickies — historically faithful, yet designed for quick changes and stage durability.
• Ladies’ dresses for the Winter’s Ball scene — elegant, flowing garments that balance 18th-century silhouettes with movement for modern staging.
Each piece was made with meticulous craftsmanship to withstand the intensity of nightly performances, while staying true to the artistic vision of the creative team.
The Art of Costume: Authenticity Meets Durability
Costuming a production of Hamilton’s calibre requires more than simply replicating historical fashion. Each garment must:
• Reflect the period accuracy of the late 18th century.
• Support dynamic choreography, with freedom of movement built into every seam.
• Survive the rigours of performance, withstanding heat, sweat, and constant wear under powerful stage lighting.
Our contribution to Hamilton highlights the expertise of our in-house team, who specialise in producing costumes that meet the dual demands of authenticity and durability — the hallmark of true stage wear.
Made in London: Supporting Art Through Craftsmanship
Producing these costumes in our South London studio speaks to a mission we are deeply passionate about: being advocates for Made in London.
London has long been a centre of textile knowledge, craftsmanship, and innovation. By manufacturing locally, we are not only able to meet tight deadlines and ensure quality control, but also contribute to sustaining the city’s heritage as a hub for costume and textile excellence.
Hamilton, like other major productions we have supported such as Moulin Rouge! and Starlight Express, demonstrates how local production in London continues to play a vital role in international theatre.
Proud to Play Our Part
Hamilton’s success is built on extraordinary storytelling, music, direction, choreography — and the countless contributions made behind the scenes. At DSI London, we are honoured to be part of that collaborative legacy, helping to bring characters and stories to life through costume.
Powerful, authentic, and made to move — just like Hamilton itself.
Hamilton is currently playing at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London.
