Introducing My First Ballet: Cinderella
Everyone’s invited to this new ballet for children aged 3+! With a narrator to help the young audience follow the story, and a shortened, recorded version of Prokofiev’s ravishing score, My First Ballet: Cinderella is the perfect introduction to ballet, and a fantastic family day out.
Working closely with the production team, DSI London delivered a range of costumes designed to meet both the creative vision and the practical demands of performance.
Each piece was developed and manufactured in our South London studio, reinforcing our commitment to Made in London production—ensuring control, quality, and timely delivery.
Character Costumes
Rabbit
A playful yet highly detailed costume, the Rabbit design focused on texture and tonal transition:
Layers of coloured toile gradually fading across the trousers, creating a soft, fur-like visual effect
A shirt crafted from delicate flowered lace, finished with ruffled neck and sleeves
A cummerbund completing the silhouette with structure and refinement
This piece demonstrates the balance between theatrical characterisation and refined garment construction.
The Fox costume required a more dramatic tonal depth while maintaining cohesion in movement:
Graduated layers of coloured toile, deepening towards richer tones to enhance the fur-like effect
A lace-embroidered waistcoat paired with a coordinating shirt
A structured neck ruffle to complete the ensemble
The result is a visually striking costume with strong stage presence and clarity of character.
Party Ball Guests
For the ballroom scenes in English National Ballet’s Cinderella, the costumes needed to deliver elegance, volume, and visual harmony on stage:
Full black net skirts layered over cream and peach netting to create depth and movement
Ivory and black structured bodices providing contrast and form
Men’s costumes featuring black sleeveless tailored tailcoats with built-in waistcoats, paired with black breeches
These designs required precise construction to ensure durability while maintaining fluidity in performance.
Puppeteers
Costumes were also produced for puppeteers supporting stage transitions. While not featured visually, these garments played a crucial role in the seamless execution of the production.
A softer, more ethereal design:
A structured top in a floaty floral fabric
A lightweight, flowing skirt designed for graceful movement
This costume reflects the importance of subtlety and elegance within the broader visual narrative.
